Spotlight(s)/This and That: William Kentridge and BLU

William Kentridge is my favorite artist, because he’s the only artist whose work has ever made me cry. His animations involve a series of charcoal drawings on large sheets of paper. The drawings are worked and reworked until they are just right, and the process is nothing less than extraordinary.

BLU creates large scale stop motion animations on exterior walls in public spaces. BLU’s work puts a modern twist on Kentridge’s technique, and it’s fascinating to see how artists from different corners of the world (Kentridge is South African, while BLU works mainly in South America) can create work that is as different as it is the same.
